Precision Reconsidered: Scientific Instruments, Culture and Access

The proposed overarching theme for SIC 2024 will be to explore the cultures of precision as they apply to the history of scientific instruments. We encourage participants to probe this topic through materiality, scientific and workshop practices, conservation and digital techniques, education and museology.

Preliminary Program

Monday Sept 16: Afternoon registration, organized tours of the new Ingenium Centre, official welcome to the conference and Algonquin territory, plenary session, opening reception.

Tuesday Sept 17: Parallel sessions, poster sessions, and more focused tours of collections at the Ingenium Centre.

Wednesday Sept 18: Parallel sessions, local excursion in afternoon.

Thursday Sept 19: Parallel sessions, AGM, conference banquet.

Friday Sept 20: Parallel sessions, local excursion afternoon.

Informal excursions before and after conference

Sept 14-15: For those who can visit Toronto, there will be a possible visit to the University of Toronto collection of historic scientific instruments.

Saturday Sept 21: For those who can visit in Montreal, there will be a possible visit to the McGill scientific instrument collections.
